Teaching: Our teaching encourages students to understand the “why” of mathematics not just the “how”. Mathematics should be understood, not learned. Students must also be able to discuss mathematics clearly, both verbally and in written form. This facilitates understanding, and also helps to develop their communication skills. New concepts must be linked to previously understood mathematics, so that this new information can be filed in their brains, and then readily recalled when required. A thorough and logical approach to problems is encouraged. Students must take a pride in the solution to a problem – the answer is not the only desired outcome, as the solution and its logical setting out are of equal importance. Students are encouraged to accept the responsibility for their own learning. Individual help is given when it is needed, but only after students have tried to solve any problems first. The more problems they can work out by themselves, the more confidence they develop, and the more independent they become.
Testing: At every level of our mathematics teaching, students are tested every week. These tests are designed to find holes in students’ knowledge, so they can do their test corrections and hence learn from their mistakes. The tests are marked the same day, and returned to the students before they leave ETLC. Immediate feedback is a valuable component of effective learning. There are major end of term exams, where students practice their exam sitting skills, and also learn to find information, filed in their heads, which is needed to answer a question under exam conditions. Test nerves quickly reduce because of the regular testing program.
Follow Up: At every lesson students’ homework is checked. This homework consists of test corrections and theory work. The homework completed is recorded, so that problems may be discussed with the teacher before the students leave. At the end of each term a report is sent home to parents detailing test and exam marks, homework completed and information about progress.
