Extension II Mathematics

Heather Huddleston and Vaishali Dave are currently enjoying Law at Sydney University. What does this have to do with Extension 2 Mathematics? The answer to this question is that Heather and Vaishali chose to do Extension 2 Mathematics for the HSC to help them achieve their best possible UAI, which was in the high 99’s for both of them.

Many of the students at ETLC are aiming for Law or Medicine courses and have decided to study Extension 2 Mathematics, despite the fact that the very demanding and challenging content of the course is not directly useful to their tertiary study in these courses. Doing well at Extension 2 Mathematics does have a very beneficial effect on a student’s UAI, and success in understanding the difficult content of the Extension 2 Course gives students the ability and confidence to cope with any course at university.

Heather Huddleston said that the discipline needed to do well in Extension 2 Mathematics, and the problem solving strategies developed along the road to understanding the content, positively affected the way she approached all of her subjects in her preparation for the HSC.

Heather started studying at ETLC at the beginning of Year Eleven, when she was placed in the third of four Extension 1 Mathematics classes in her school. She had little confidence in her mathematics, and believed that attempting Extension 2, three terms later, was not a possibility. However, she said that she thrived on the excellent teaching, continual testing, and the guidance given to her at ETLC, and swiftly improved her ranking at North Sydney Girls High. She finished Year Twelve ranked second in Extension 2 Mathematics at her school.

Vaishali, whose ranking rose to sixth in Extension 2 Mathematics at North Sydney Girls High in Year Twelve, said that before she started at ETLC in Year Ten, she disliked mathematics. However, through the teaching at ETLC, she gained a broader understanding of mathematics and its relevance to the world we live in. Vaishali learned to appreciate mathematics, and as her appreciation grew, her results and confidence grew to such an extent that her friends at school would approach her for help with the mathematical problems they were having. For Vaishali, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 were her best two results in the HSC.

Vaishali also said that the logical thinking and analytical skills she developed throughout the Extension 2 course she took at ETLC are helping her with her university study. So the study of Extension 2 Mathematics is having a far reaching beneficial effect on her, even after her school days are finished.

The Effective Teaching and Learning Centre, which teaches mathematics and essay writing to students from Year Seven to Year Twelve, specialises in Extension 1 and Extension 2 Mathematics. Jan Aspinall, director of ETLC, believes that the earlier the students learn good study habits and develop a thorough approach to mathematics, the easier mathematics becomes, and that once students experience success in mathematics, they really enjoy the challenges it presents. The good study habits developed at ETLC are then applied by students to other subjects. This helps to improve their academic performance in general and thus maximises their UAI.

The Effective Teaching and Learning Centre is located at Eastwood and at Roseville. These are the only locations and  only a limited number of students attend the centre so that Jan can personally monitor each student’s progress. This allows her to help each student achieve his or her full academic potential. The students who attend ETLC come from selective, government and private schools from all over Sydney to benefit from its excellent teaching and support.

Extension 2 Mathematics is a very challenging and demanding course. Students who decide to take Extension 2 Mathematics for their HSC must be prepared to dedicate themselves to their studies because it demands a great deal of time and focussed thought. All other subjects also need time, so students have to be well organised, and very time-efficient.

Why take Extension 2 Mathematics?

Students who have a passion and aptitude for mathematics find the challenges very rewarding. If students do well at this level then their UAI receives a good boost.

Students who are not right at the top of their grade in Extension 1 Mathematics, or perhaps any other subject, could also benefit from doing the Extension 2 Course if they have a very thorough approach to their work, are proficient in Extension 1, and have the dedication and determination to succeed.

Students should not take Extension 2 Mathematics because they think it makes them sound intelligent, or because someone is pressuring them to do it. You really have to want to do it for the right reasons to achieve success.
